Alternate Nostril Breathing

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Alternate Nostril Breathing, Nadi shodana, focuses the mind, balances the nervous system, and cleanses the energy channels.

This is one of the most powerful breath techniques.  You can do it to quiet the mind before meditation, re-focus in the middle of the day, or cleanse your energy for a deep sleep.  It’s good for anxiety or if you’re feeling a little off and want to come back into alignment.  If you’re about to give a big presentation, this is the breath to do.  It’s said to balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain, so I use it when I need mental clarity – before I write or start a creative or strategic project.

Nadi means “channel” and shodhana means “cleansing,” so it’s literally cleansing the energy channels in the body. It also regulates the cooling and warming cycles of the body and lowers the heart rate to relieve tension.  This particular practice count is beginner-level.  Over time, you can slowly increase the count as you get deeper into the practice. Keep at it three or four times a week to feel the benefits. Hold off on practicing it if your nasal passages are blocked or if you have high blood pressure. Otherwise, it’s a real power tool.

Enjoy… and remember, you have the power to choose how to be in every moment of every day.  Choose to shine your light and make a declaration: I Am Power Living!

With Purpose & Power,

Terri
