Practice Gratitude

How deep is your gratitude? Gratitude is the expression of appreciation for what is good in your life. It is a sincere feeling of thankfulness and joy that can actually improve your emotional and physical well-being. It can trigger the parasympathetic nervous system which helps the body relax, decreasing the stress hormone cortisol and increasing the feel-good hormone oxytocin. Grateful people report higher levels of positive emotions, life satisfaction, vitality, optimism and are more resilient to emotional setbacks. They are also more likely to reach their goals and less likely to judge success in terms of possessions. Gratitude is a "chosen attitude" and over time can rewire your brain and become a personality trait. 

In good and bad times, actively practice gratitude. 

Acknowledge the good that exists in your life starting with breath itself. Think about someone who has inspired you or shown you kindness and write them a thank-you note. Given our materialistic "look-at-me" culture, beware of envy and cynicism. Regardless of the seemingly ideal life others may post on social media, you never know what someone is really going through behind closed doors. Things may not be exactly how you want them to be but they could be worse. Know that you are probably better off than millions in economically disadvantaged parts of the world. Every day make a conscious effort to count your blessings. Thankfulness is the most powerful statement to the Universe - an affirmation that even before you ask, you have received.

YOUR CALL TO ACTION

Your call to action this week is to practice gratitude. Ask yourself: How can I deepen my gratitude? Slow down and pay attention. Write down three things you're grateful for in this moment. Notice where you may take things for granted such as a situation or person you feel will always be there for you. Imagine what your life would be like without that situation or person. This entire week consider ways you can acknowledge and express sincere thankfulness for big and little joys. That's your practice.
