Treat Yourself to Life: Understanding the Power of Spiritual Mind Treatment
by Raymond Charles Barker
Raymond Charles Barker, a leader in the New Thought spiritual movement, teaches how to improve all areas of your life by means of a technique known as Mind Treatment.
This little book was one of the classic texts in my mom’s library (I actually still have her original copy with a purple cover). It is the precursor to what many call the Law of Attrraction. It explains how, through spiritual mind treatment, you can deliberately impress the subconscious with a creative idea so that it can manifest. Dr. Barker opened the First Church of Religious Science in New York City in 1946, was President of the International New Thought Alliance and a well-known minister, author and teacher. As he explains:
A power is in you right at this instant waiting to be released into the creative action which is your natural birthright, whether it is in your own health, your relations with other people, or your own work.
Dr. Barker puts forth that the book is not written to give you faith. It is written to show you how to translate your faith into right subconscious action, to produce the results you want. Your results will be determined by your ability to let go of the past, to realize the greatness of the moment, and to accept for yourself increased good in the future. Your future is self-determined.
A Spiritual Mind Treatment is using your conscious mind to select what you want, and direct your subconscious mind to bring this into objective experience.
He explains the difference between prayer, meditation and treatment. According to Dr. Barker, prayer is an action on the part of man reaching out to a God in order to get something; it indicates petition. Meditation is the act of absorbing an idea into consciousness. As you meditate upon an idea you absorb it into the structure of your thought, and it becomes you. Meditation is a quiet, relaxed absorption of ideas. The difference between meditation and treatment is absorption. In prayer you beg for an idea. In meditation you absorb an idea. In treatment you project an idea.
Treatment is the synchronization of the individual with the universal mind. It is the blending of the individual with the universal, so that the individual merely becomes the vehicle through which the universal acts and the individual can direct that action to a given end. A treatment is nothing more or less than a directive action of the subconscious mind. The moment will power enters in, it is no longer a spiritual treatment. Dr. Barker explains:
In spiritual treatment, I realize that I am in a power which is already in action, and which I merely let happen through me. I clear my thought regarding a situation in order to let my good happen, because I am not treating conditions, I am treating consciousness.
If you start with the premise that the creative power of the infinite mind is already waiting to flow through you, then everything is possible if you choose and direct your subconscious mind.
